A second-year student working towards a BSc in Chemistry, Sbusisiwe joined the ASSIST during her first year as a tutor for learners in grades 10-12 in mathematics. She then applied to become a director at the end of 2015.
Rovhuya Mahada | Finances Director
A third-year accounting student, Rovhuya is now in her second year with the ASSIST. The organization's vision and mission statement are directly in line with her core values: mainly, giving a helping hand where it's needed the most. She's fun, energetic, outgoing, and dedicated to everything she does. What drives her is her work ethic and the knowledge that she can be the change she wants to see in the world today.
Busisiwe Mashiane | Learner Relations Director
An enthusiastic, energetic, and driven third-year chemical engineering student, Busisiwe joined the ASSIST during her first year at Wits. After tutoring mathematics for nearly two years, she applied to become a director in 2015. She is also a dancer and events coordinator with the Dance@Wits Society, a secretary for the Wits Baha'i Society, and a volunteer with GrowingUnitedly (a youth-empowering NGO back home). She strongly believes that everyone has the capacity to achieve their dreams and is willing to do all thatshe can to assist.
Karabelo Mosia | Administrative Director
A second-year BSc student hoping to graduate in Computational and Applied Mathematics, Karabelo has been a part of the ASSIST since 2013. She began as a grade 10-12 maths tutor before becoming an administrative director in 2015. She is a lively person who loves to laugh and serve others. The ASSIST has a special place in her heart, as it is aligned with one of her core values: educating and impacting the generations to come.
Peter Motse | Mathematics Director
A chemical engineering student, Peter believes in using education to better the lives of those from poor backgrounds. He joined the ASSIST in 2013 and, after two enjoyable years as a tutor, took on a new challenge by becoming a director last year. The rest is not history -- he wishes to remain with the organization for a long time, aiming to see many of our learners make it through high school and into university.
Mlibo Mthembu | Mathematics Director
A third-year medical student, Mlibo joined the ASSIST in his first year at Wits and enjoyed tutoring so much that he wished to make a difference as director of our mathematics curriculum. He is currently involved with several similar organizations and tutors first- and second-year medics in various subjects. He believes one must strive in order to succeed.
Kwando Shabalala | Tutor Relations Director
Driven by the wish to lend a helping hand wherever he can, Kwando is a physiotherapy student who joined the ASSIST as a mathematics tutor last year. Seeking to do more than just teach, he became a Tutor Relations Director in order to further develop his skills and take on a vital role in this wonderful organization.
Hemlata Singh | English Director
A passionate third-year law student and proud Witsie, Hemlata joined forces with the ASSIST last year as a dedicated English tutor and went on to become a director at the end of 2015. She is an ardent supporter of the organization's cause and aspires to uplift the program, specifically by improving its English curriculum.
Joy Thekiso | Marketing/PR Director
A final-year law student, Joy joined the ASSIST during her first year at Wits. She started as a tutor before applying for directorship in 2014. She is also a deputy chair of a similar organization back home, where she helps facilitate tutoring and mentoring for learners and organizes annual career exhibitions. She also mentors first-year students with the Wits Counseling and Career Development Unit.
